CV Community Leader Summit

The 2021 CV Community Leader Summit was a great success. Thank you to all who attended! Check back in February 2022 to learn when the next event will take place!

On November 3, 2021, Ranja CV hosted the first ever virtual Community Leader Summit on Wednesday, November 3, 2021. We invited community leaders from Cabo Verdean community organizations based all over the world. In attendance at the summit were 48 community leaders representing 33 CV community organizations from 6 countries - Cabo Verde, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, and United States. This included 7 U.S. states (Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Philadelphia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and California), as well as the District of Columbia (Washington, DC - US Capitol). SUMMIT HOST | SAMIRA ALI GOMES

Samira Ali Gomes is a Kriola, born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden. At the core, she is a social entrepreneur and has worked with and created many initiatives. She is the founder of EMMSTechnology, a non-profit to empower WOC in the Nordic tech industry. She is also a Programmes Manager at Impact Hub King's Cross in London, England, where she supports entrepreneurs to set up sustainable businesses and to become financially independent. Samira is a also a member of the Board of Advisors for Ranja CV. Samira works extensively with the professional and career development of women and people of colour in different fields, and uses her skills from working in tech and communication to empower the community through knowledge and networking. CABO VERDE


 

Cabo Verde Digital is an initiative of the Cabo Verdean government to enable the innovation ecosystem for Startups. Cabo Verde Digital was founded in 2019 in Praia, Cabo Verde. Cabo Verde Digital comes forth as the government's arm to follow up on a series of public initiatives, spanning from coding school for youngsters to scholarships to create businesses, and public support to attract digital nomads to the country. Women and Girls Self Defense Karate Team of Ponta do Sol, Santo Antão is a collaboration between CV Americans and CVs of Ponta do Sol to setup and recruit a team of 30 women & girls, providing uniforms, sets of protective sparring equipment, & 150 lessons a year for 2 years in Ponta do Sol. Supremeoverstanding is a community-based organization established in 1990 with the primary objective of mentoring the youth in Cape Verde. The organization is based out of Praia, Cabo Verde. Local gang violence, overcrowded prisons, teenage pregnancy, unemployment....all lead to a situation of utter despair for many of our youths. Proper mentoring programs will inspire greatness. A Vontade Tours + Services handles travel throughout the Cabo Verde islands; A Vontade Services handles relocation, real estate and citizenship process needs. Cape Verdean Basketball League is the First Professional Basketball League in Cabo Verde who brings players from all over the world to come play in Cabo Verde and expose themselves to the Cape Verdean culture! Sonvela is a traditional charity currently transitioning into an investment fund. Our focus will be on micro/small businesses and tech companies. Sonvela is registered in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Cabo Verdeans Na Japão is a group of Cabo Verdeans currently residing in the country of Japan. The group comes together for events to build community, celebrate Cabo Verdean culture and support one another. CVs na Japão has engaged members from Cabo Verde, the U.S., and more. MASSACHUSETTS, U.S.

 

Associacão Cabo Verdiana de Brockton, Inc.(ACVB) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit community based organization, whose ongoing mission is to provide education, health, civic, social and human services. First known as the Cape Verdean-American Association, Inc. the name was changed in 1991 to Associação Cabo Verdiana de Brockton, Inc. due to a merge with New Cape Verdean Alliance, founded in 1989. Cape Verdean American Medical Society is a society of Cabo Verdean American physicians and other health care professionals interested in improving the quality of health care in the island. Cape Verdean Association in New Bedford | As the vanguard of Cape Verdean heritage in the United States, we aspire to reach, build and strengthen partnerships throughout the Diaspora. The CVANB will foster continued appreciation for our history, deliver culturally competent programs and services that enrich all communities, making a difference in the lives of the Cape Verdean people here and abroad. The Cape Verdean Nurses Association (CVNA) was founded in 2016 in Boston, MA with CVNA President Rute I. Teixeira leading the association as a way to unite Cape Verdean Nurses and give back to the community we serve. Cape Verdean STEM Society (CSS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to contributing to the advancement of the STEM fields in Cabo Verde. The organization currently offers a mentorship program in which supportive STEM professionals provide youth with individualized volunteer tutoring and mentoring. They also aim to unite all STEM professionals and work on projects vital for our technological advancement in education, health systems, tech, and the environment. More

Kriola’s Professional Association is the first 501c3 dedicated to helping Kriolas and women of color broaden their knowledge and grow their network through resource sharing and programming. KPA’s mission is to bring together Cabo Verdean women of diverse occupations and provide opportunities for them to help themselves and others grow personally and professionally through leadership, education, networking, and support. Mila Mila, Inc. is an organization that aims to preserve Cabo Verde's vibrant culture and history through books, lifestyle & arts. The organization was founded in 2015 and is based in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S. Mili Mila captivates the essence of being everywhere while preserving Cabo Verde’s vibrant and innovative culture through books, lifestyle, and the arts. Our Children, Our Future, Inc. (OCOF, Inc.) is an all-volunteer nonprofit with a mission to provide food, clothing, school supplies, & toys to the disadvantaged youth of Cabo Verde. The organization was founded in the year 2006. The organization has provided these goods, donated and purchased through fundraising, to many schools and youth programs since our incorporation, and helped hundreds of children. RHODE ISLAND, U.S.


 

Cape Verdean Museum is dedicated to the preservation of the history and culture of Cape Verde and Cape Verdeans in the United States. The Cape Verdean Museum was founded in the year 2003. The organization is based in Rhode Island, U.S. The museum and its volunteers regularly take part in cultural events around Rhode Island. Capeverdean American Community Development (CACD) aims to develop and enrich human personality through educational programs, group association within the framework of American democratic ideals and the fundamental traditions of Cape Verdean culture. Cape Verdean Veteran Memorial serves as an everlasting tribute to the service and sacrifice of Cape Verdean Veterans. The Memorial is a reminder for present and future generations of the dedication and contribution made by Cape Verdean Veterans to support global peace efforts. Poderoza: International Conference on Cabo Verdean Women is a biennial conference that takes place on the first Saturday in March. The conference was founded in 2015 by by Terza Silva Lima-Neves and Aminah Fernandes Pilgrim. Since the first Poderoza Conference in 2016, which took place at Providence College (USA), the conference has welcomed hundreds of participants from across continents. Rhode Island Cape Verdean Heritage Subcommittee aims to commemorate and preserve the Cape Verdean culture, to improve the well-being of Cape Verdean children and adults in the United States, and to foster brotherhood and understanding among Cape Verdeans. The Subcommittee is also responsible for organizing the independence of Cabo Verde festival in Rhode Island, which is the most celebrated cultural event by the Cape Verdean people. Cabo Queer is a social media network that celebrates the global LGBTQIA+ and Gender Expansive Cabo Verdean community through representation. Cabo Queer was founded in the year 2020. The organization is New York City-based (U.S.), but has developed a global outreach. Learn more.

Cape Verdeans of Philadelphia is a group welcome to all CV Americans living in the tri state area of southeastern Pennsylvania. Here we can learn and teach each other about the history and culture of our ancestors, by sharing information, ideas, and fellowship. Cape Verdeans of The Carolinas Association (CVC) was founded in 2014 and is committed to preserving and promoting the culture of the Republic of Cabo Verde in North and South Carolina. The Association serves as a vehicle of engagement and support among the Cape Verdean population in these two states. Cape Verdeans of Atlanta is an organization dedicated to the preservation of Cape Verdean culture and heritage. We are a social organization for all. The organization was founded in the year 1993, and is based in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S. The organization has also created a vibrant Facebook community of Cabo Verdeans based in Atlanta, Georgia. Cape Verdean West Association works to provide a forum for the discussion, and preservation of the Cape Verdean ideas and Culture. CVSA also works to encourage academic achievement and cultural awareness. CVWA also promotes family-oriented cultural, social, educational and charitable activities that benefit the islands of Cabo Verde and the Cape Verdean-American community. The NextGen Kriolus (formerly known as CV Millennials of Northern California) is a group of Cabo Verdeans based in The Bay Area of California (San Francisco, Oakland, and Sacrament) who build community through monthly events. The group is relatively new, having been established in 2019. The group plans social events. Their last event included the celebration of the opening of Cape Green, a CV-owned restaurant in North Hollywood, California in 2020. Cape Verdeans of San Diego is a community organization based in San Diego, California, U.S. The organization puts together Carnival, Gala and Annual Cookouts all held in San Diego to present CV culture. We welcome CV community organizations based anywhere in the World. Ranja CV is headquartered in the U.S., so has a stronger network in the United States. However, we are always working to strengthen our presence in Cabo Verde and in European. Therefore, we would love to have organizations from these areas attend. How will this event be structured?

We will be sharing formal details soon. However, the event will consist of Opening Remarks, Networking rotations in breakout sessions (opportunities for facilitated small group discussions to allow participating organizations to learn about each other). Closing remarks will also take place.

Does my organization need to prepare anything for the Summit?

Nothing formal needs to be prepared. However, we encourage organizations to be prepared to share their organization’s work, as well as any upcoming events or initiatives with which they may like support promoting or planning.

What inspired Ranja CV to host this event?

Organizations like Criolas Contra Cancer, CV STEM Society, RI CV Heritage Subcommittee, Kriolas Professional Association, and Poderoza Conference have already begun the work of bringing CV organizations together. Some have just gotten started. Other organizations have been uniting Cabo Verdean organizations for years. Ranja CV aims to contribute to this continued work with a specific focus on virtual international networking opportunities, and therefore, aims to build upon the work of so many CV organizations to expand opportunities for connection & networking.
